Let’s Talk Bookisch: Causes of Blogging Slump

I’m literally in the middle of a blogging slump, so it’s high time to get down to the bottom of its causes!

The Prompt

This week’s prompt really catches me in the middle of a huuuge blogging slump. Which you might have noticed. But I’ve already started tackling it at the beginning of July, so who knows? Maybe I can blog about defeating blogging slumps soon.

About Let’s Talk Bookish

Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme created by Rukky @ Eternity Books where bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week each Friday! Now it’s run by Aria @Book Nook BitsHere are the other prompts for July 2023.

Bookish Thoughts on Blogging Slumps

When I started blogging in June 2015, I was filled to the brim with excitement. And I had quite a lot of free time, so the perfect combination to start a (book) blog.

And then I got older, responsibilities piled on top of responsibilities – life changed. Still, I was able to somewhat maintain a blogging schedule.

So, what changed?

  • Less time
  • More work
  • More health issues
  • Longer to do lists
  • Less energy
  • The list goes on.

What it sums up to is, in my best guess, a classic burn-out.

But more important is what you define as a blogging slump to pinpoint the causes of it. Missing a few blog posts? Dreading to sit in front of the blinking cursor? Lacking inspiration?

To me, not sticking to my blog editorial calendar is annoying but not really a problem. Not having enough time to blog doesn’t cause a blogging slump to me.

Not knowing what to blog about or feeling like no one really cares for what you’re doing is getting closer, though.

But on the bottom, it’s a combination of “have to”, “can’t”, and “don’t want to” which is a slippery slope into the blogging slump area. So putting too much pressure on yourself, and expecting too much is a dangerous road to walk on.

When your blog starts to feel like a chore or a job it’s time to reconsider if you are not making a living out of blogging.

  1. You hit the nail on the head here.

Life can get in the way of blogging for sure. I’ve had long breaks from it in the past when health problems, work, family stuff, etc. was overwhelming me.
