Most people age along with the characters they’ve been reading, I guess. I’ve noticed how my perspective on reading has been changing as well, and for the better, I hope.
The prompt
This week’s prompt is: Has your perspective on reading changed as you’ve grown older? If so, has it affected how you write your reviews?
About The Book Blogger Hop
The Book Blogger Hop was originally created by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books in March 2010 and continued until December 31, 2012. It was reintroduced on February 15, 2013, with the approval of Jennifer. The hop takes place weekly, starting on a Friday and concluding the following Thursday. Each week features a specific prompt that poses a book-related question for participants to address.
Reading Changes as I’ve grown older
When I started my journey into reading, I absolutely despised it. I couldn’t get the hang of it in first class and had to be tutored after school. Somehow, being forced to learn how to read turned into my parents and other relatives being forced to buy more and more books for me because I ran out of them way too fast.
And that love for reading has stayed with me ever since. But that story would make for quite a boring blog post. Luckily, it’s not the only reading change I’ve experienced while growing up, and I’m pretty sure there will be more changes in the years to come as well.
Way back when, I felt like I had to finish every book I’d started. DNFing was not an option. Not even for books I’ve checked out at the local library. I think that only changed when I started book blogging, so like 10 years ago?
The more time I actively spent on books, the more I noticed how important it is to enjoy them. I don’t read simply to learn. I want to enjoy learning. There are enough activities I have to force myself to do even though I don’t want to, so why should reading feel like a chore?
If I don’t vibe with a book, I don’t need to waste my time and energy on it.
And that approach has been added to my reviews as well. They are still fair, but I don’t force myself to find something good about a book even if there is no good thing. And I don’t care if that review is about a book I’ve bought or a queer novel I got as an ARC.
So, in a way, my reviewing style has grown more mature. More authentic.
